I'm thinking of installing Damn Small Linux on another partition as my "School OS." I need a light OS that boots fast for me to use in school. I'm planning to install Evolution and Tomboy on it and use the configuration files of those apps on my Ubuntu install. I'll make a link of my .tomboy and .evolution on my main Ubuntu install to my Home folder for my DSL install.
Is that feasible?

Tomboy and Evolution require a substantial amount of Gnome dependencies such as Mono and GTK2. DSL has neither of these by default, and thus installing these two applications might be rather difficult. But more importantly, these two applications are not 'light' ones, and thus any speed benefit you hope to gain by using DSL might not be realized.
Either look for lighter, GTK1 applications that complement DSL, or put Ubuntu on a weight loss program.

I've never even been able to get Tomboy to work in Ubuntu with the Fluxbox windows manager; highly doubt it would work in DSL! :) Personally if I were using DSL, I would use web-based email and take notes in the text editor. But why can't you just use Ubuntu and put your laptop into hibernation? That will get around the "quick boot" requirement. There are other ways to speed up Ubuntu, too. Frankly, I think of DSL as a "last resort" OS for old hardware. I would never run it on a computer capable of running Ubuntu. That is just my opinion, with apologies to the DSL fans. :)
