I am using Ubuntu 8.10 on my Macbook, (no no the new Macbook). When I run it using VirtualBox, even though I use "Seamless integration", I can not get a screen resoulution over 800 x 600. I think that it might be the GMA X3100 built in Intel graphics card. Has anybody experienced this or do you have a solution? Please advise asap. Thanks!

I am requesting this to be moved to the virtualization forum since I think they might be able to help you there better.

Well apparently this is a known bug with using Ibex in a virtual machine, its mainly from Ibex using a new approach to detecting hardware such as monitors.
Ibex on full install should work fine for most people (hopefully) though I am not encouraged to give Ibex a full install personally.

Do we have any idea if they intend to resolve this by its official release date of October 31st (ok, ok, . . . I say "official" in quotes)

I dont think there is, the way ibex detects monitors is vastly different then Hardy so the errors in virtualbox may never be solved.
Are you using Virutalbox mainly for testing though?

I am requesting this to be moved to the virtualization forum since I think they might be able to help you there better. My experience with the Virtualization forum is that they're not really geared toward problems with virtual machines running under Mac OS X, like VMware Fusion. Their interest is mainly VMs running under Ubuntu, in order to run Windows in a VM. Besides, some of the problems of running Ubuntu in VMware Fusion relate to the same hardware issues that users of GNU/Linux directly on the hardware have. So, I would request that this thread, and others like it, be left in this Apple forum.

I use VirtualBox becuase I require a couple of Windows Only applications. I don't want to dual boot, because I like my Mac a lot of the time, (though I must say that Ubuntu is by far the best contender against the Mac). Though thinking of it, I bet that I *could* dual boot, boot to a Ubuntu platform, run VirtualBox from it, and then run my Windows apps from VirtualBox which will reside on Ubuntu. hmmmm. . . . . Boy I wish that this ibex bug could be fixed.

Has anyone used VirtualBox dual-booting on a Mac? So, you load Ubuntu at bootup instead of Leopard and then from within Ubuntu, run VirtualBox to get Windows applications. Has anyone tried that before on a Mac running OSX Leopard?

Well apparently there will be major updates to the new system... but on Jaunty Jackalope the next ubuntu after Ibex.

Do we know exactly when 8.10 will be released, or its release date? I don't think that I can wait for "Jaunty Jackalope" . . . . . do you have a link where I can read more of what "features" will be implemented on it?

I thought that was the case as well, but I verified with the admins of this forum that it is the place these sort of questions should go.

Like what? I would guess that really the iSight might be the only piece of hardware that you need to natively use in a VM...

BTW, that talk about the "place these sort of questions should go" won't help if the answers to those questions are not within the compass of user interest in that "place". This forum here is for Apple users who also use Ubuntu, it doesn't say that it's only for those who install Ubuntu directly on the hardware. I've been through this kind of bureaucratic argument before and quit in disgust (missing Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy in the process). I'm less willing to be bullied about by mods, I guess...

I have done two completely new installs of Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell GX-240 PC and I am seeing the exact same thing. I cannot change the screen resolution. The only listed option is 800x600. The resolution makes the windows so large that they are outside of the monitor's range of view.

I did another Kubuntu 8.10 install and that screen resolution allows for many different settings. So what is wrong with Ubuntu 8.10 and how do I fix the problem?
