View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.10 - (G3 iBook rev 2.2) Gnome can not launch apps.

Tried the beta out on my old iBook and I have some serious problems I thought I would share.
Install went just fine, no real problems aside from adding "nosplash" to the boot loader.
However when I log into gnome I am unable to launch applications from the menu or the tool bar. Gnome terminal, Firefox, Gnome help all fail silently. I did notice that Tomboy (for whatever reason ???) can launch and I get the splash page for OpenOffice.. then it will draw the window for the app but immediately close it.
The strange thing about all of this is if I log in through another system and do
DISPLAY=:0 xterm
I can launch applications from the terminal and they act normally.
Any ideas?
Edit: so here is something.. if I launch Firefox in the terminal.. then click the icon in the toolbar another window appears. weird..

Same problem in XFCE.
FLuxbox works just fine all the apps launch from the menu just like they should.
Begrudgingly I installed KDE, its way way to slow for this system.. but it does launch apps corectly. Konequror, Firefox, and gnome-terminal launch.
So.. we can tell:
* This did not work by default, I've made pretty much no changes after install.
* There is nothing wrong with the hardware such as a bad disk or bad ram as the apps launch but only from an xterm.
* Creating an icon for xterm works just fine.
* Compiz is off.
* Tried both ATI and Vesa xservers. Used default and a previously working xconfig.
* There is noting in ~/.xsession-errors or really any file in /var/log to speak of. (all I have are firefox errors saying no existing window.. this is normal)
I'm in the process of reinstalling to see if this happens when I choose all the defaults.

No good. Happens on a 100% default install with Intrepid. Gnome is completely unusable.
My iBook is a G3 750FX 900Mhz rev 2.2 (aka "dual usb" model) 640Megs of Ram, 60Gig Hard Disk, with an ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (7500) gpu.

Sounds like you may be running out of RAM. How big is the swap partition?
Also, try saving /var/log/Xorg.0.log and and /var/log/messages onto a flash drive and attach them to this thread.

If that were true, why is it I can launch say.. firefox from the console but not the icon?
Alright here.. I logged into gnome and tried to start firefox, evolution, and gnome help (top 3 icons) after they failed these are the logs.

No good on the memory man, I thought that too. I *think* it's due to something in gnome, gconf or some gnome session thing. Desktop Environments that use Gnome parts (Gnome / XFCE) fail, those that don't use Gnome components (Fluxbox / KDE) work just fine.
At some point I'm going to get rid of this and reload Debian back on it.. I'm not really at a loss here, I just thought I would test out intrepid. ...so this is more of a bug report so others don't have this problem than anything else.

I have the same problem on my iBook. I just installed the release version of 8.10 (upgrading from 8.04 which was working OK): the menus won't launch anything. If I select an app in a menu, I see a message saying at the bottom of the screen saying "Starting Terminal" (or whatever app I chose), and the cursor spins for ten seconds or so. Then nothing happens.

Yep.
What I found you what can do is you can create an icon to launch xterm and that will at least restore some functionality to your system. Why this works and other apps do not I don't know.

OK, xterm works. However, if I try to launch an app with it, I get the message "Illegal Instruction". What does this mean?

What app.. it means the program tried to execute an instruction set your processor does not understand. Probably Altivec. (G4 Optimized program, you will have to rebuild the program. btw what one is it because I don't get that.)

I get the "illegal instruction" message trying to launch any app: I've tried launching firefox, gedit, gnome-terminal, synaptic, gparted, vlc, rhythmbox, gucharmap and several others. These apps worked fine under 8.04.

This is happening on my G3 iBook but the apps themselves are fine as they run in KDE, so it some app launcher that has been compiled with the altivec enabled in GNOME. I will log back in into GNOME in a few hours after I have rebuilt mplayer without altivec support (every distribution release it is the same  ) and try running some apps from the command line. It is strange how I am able to run a terminal from a shortcut but nothing else works.
As a side note, KDE is very pretty and very slow. Maybe on a faster machine I would consider running 4.2 over GNOME.

Same here. I have a G3 800 and none of my applications launch either. I am kind of new to all this, so I am just going to wait for smarter people than I to figure this one out.

I had posted on this issue about 1 month back and was told it was probably alpha release issues. However I have a full install on my G3 PowerBook and it's worse than the Beta version was. In the Beta Xfce would launch apps but now only KDE will launch apps (don't like the KDE4 much).
Same problem. "Illegal instruction-core dump".
also, the live CD won't boot at all even with "nosplash video=ofonly"
Sadly, the new totem youtube and BBC plugins works great in Intrepid as does gnash in firefox. They suck in Hardy.

I will try to find what package this is in and check for altivec and rebuild and report back

Ok it was the libpixman package, in the configure.ac it was doing a check for altivec that passed on the G3 so I hardcoded the VMX flags to -mno-altivec and rebuilt. Now writing this from firefox inside of gnome.
I am attaching the deb os you can run sudo dpkg -i libpixman-1-0_0.12.0-1_powerpc.deb from a command prompt. This will leave the package manager reporting about update for libpixman which you will not want to update.
If you cannot get a command prompt, try dropping to a shell by ctl-alt-F1, run the command and best to reboot.

Well done that man. Installed on my son's old iMac G3 and he is now much happier. Next problem is to figure out why CodeBlocks fails to start. (I used your trick of running with gdb and found the problematic library to be /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0. I've just got to figure out what to do about it now!)
Cheers!

I am a developer but not on ubuntu systems (C/C++, Java on Win32/RHEL 4.x/5.x, maybe soon Ubuntu servers), my ibook is used at home for sitting on my bed reading pdf or browsing the web.
There always has been an issue with altivec since the ppc arch became unsupported so I have gone through the pain with mplayer with each distribution release. I think feisty was the worse as liboil, ffmepg and others had to be rebuilt so it was quick enough for me to find it.
The problem now is that the next release will most likely have this error as it is not an issue with the rules file but in the autoconf for libpix, specifically the code checking for altivec support.

Plz excuse the double post the rt2x00 usb driver is a bit flaky.
Below is the general outline for rebuilding a package, you can google for it. Glib is a bit different so I am currently rebuiling it myself as a lot of gnome software will use it.
Find the package that offending library is in using search in the package manager. Scratch that does not list it, through google it is libglib2.0-0 and a big sucker it is. It houses many C cross-platform utility functions, I have looked at it before but used the Boost libs instead but that does not fix your problem.
Exit the package manager, create a build directory and cd into, then to get the source
apt-get source <package>
Get the build dependances for building the package
sudo apt-get build-dep <package>
Apply the Ubuntu specific patches to the original sources
dpkg-source -x <package>-ubuntu-verson.dsc
This should extract all the sources and apply the patches.
Change to the source directory.
Check in debian/rules for any altivec or runtime-detection options. Set any altivec options to no-altived. In your case there is none.
To build it
fakeroot debian/rules binary
The new deb package will be created above the current directory so cd ..
and can run dpkg -i <package>.deb

Yes as it will revert back to the original.

It looks like the codeblocks problem is not altivec related, it looks like there is a null pointer being derefenced when I run gdb on codeblocks with a debug build of glib.
As I know nothing about codeblocks (I use ecplise as an IDE) and as I am out of time, I am going to leave this for someone else to sort out. It is most likely some missing parameter but I am sure a codeblocks specific forum should be able to help out.
Ia attach a dump file.

open a terminal, make sure that it is an executable that you are going to run. You can check by running ldd app. If it is not an executable you will have open the file in an editor an figure out where the executable is and what env options may be required to run it.
then gdb app and r (to run)

As for the codeblocks item, it seems amd64 is having similar crash with tracker.
I suggest that codeblocks is rebuilt and run unstripped (with debug symbols)

Sure, but I was looking for a way to do that from the icon so I could see what part was failing. Is that possible?

Hey all.
I am doing my best to get my G3 up on 8.1. I have overcome the cdrom problem and no video problem but now I have this apps not running thing and I'm stuck. I'm attempting to follow the instructions here, but if I shell out to a command prompt the backlight is so bright I can't read the screen. Maybe I've been fighting this and am just having a block.
Thanks for any and all assistance.

The libpixman fix worked great for me. I logged into a KDE session to install it but it seems that your problem is worse somehow. BTW, KDE was the only WM that would run all of the apps without them crashing.
Oddly, on both of my PowerBooks, a G3 and a G4, KDE packages will not upgrade though they are present.

I have two debootstrap builds I am working with on 32-bit PPC platforms (no altivec). One I installed xorg and xubuntu-desktop, the other xorg and the gnome package.
I was getting the same behavior as the initial thread topic (couldn't launch apps from the WM) with my XFCE build
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/50470
The libpixmap w/o altivec fixed my issues launching the apps in XFCE. (BTW - can someone explain why in these scenarios the apps were able to be launched from a terminal but not the desktop?)
Interestingly (not sure why?) standard apps on my gnome desktop generally launched - although Firefox (and probably others I didn't yet run into?) did have the illegal instruction issue and the libpixmap did fix the Firefox error on my gnome system as well.
I have been using Debian and for certain reasons am looking to get Ubuntu-based systems working on my 32-bit PPC platforms without altivec. Wondering how pervasive these issues are in Ubuntu with apps/packages being compiled with Altivec. Is proper altivec detection/support for PPC something that is addressed in an ongoing fashion - or something that actually is falling by the wayside and expected to get worse over time?

Altivec has always been a problem since ppc became unsupported. But other than the pixman issue, the only issue I have is mplayer which used to come in both G3 and G4 flavours when it was supported. However the rebuild only takes about 2 hours, go get a pizza. All other programs that had problems have improved since feisty.
