Hey guys, I'm pretty new around here. I'm a design student at UCLA, I made this and thought it might be a cool little logo update.

I think that is very nice. Maybe I'm just a sucker for transparency ;)

Nice work. How about some color in the Ubuntu text and perhaps a less agressive font for the "linux for human beings" line?

fellow designer here.

i like the direction but dislike some aspects of the execution. namely, the transparency bothers me. i would prefer a solid treatment. if you could somehow maintain chromatic intensity of the original logo whilst incorporating transparency i may be more amenable to it.

maybe try varying the level of transparency as objects recede into the distance? ie., foreground is less transparent the middle and background.

also, the foreground sphere appears to not be centered within its corresponding groove on the ring. i realize this is probably due to perspective distortion but it should still be made to look right.

i hope you found this critique helpful, if not then please ignore.

Yeah, the transparancy didn't work as planned. The colors when blended through eachother (especially in the foreground sphere) seem to have mereged a bit too much to read properly.

The distant objects really don't read as transparent to me anyway.

The alignment problem is a perspective issue. Though I'm really not bothered by it (it reads as perspective to me), but I do see that it is not perfectly aligned in 2d space.

I also considered a more aggressive angle for the perspective, and it worked well as a wallpaper, but the idea behind the logo was lost.

I very much the tag line font, and I tried a number of different typefaces before settling on this one. I think it is square enough to relate to the technical minds involved with linux, but is traditional enough to work with the old world feel of ubuntu.
