My MythBuntu (8.04) box works well, most of the time. Since it was installed, at least a year ago, it's had intermittent problems with the Graphical interface. I'd blamed this on VNC but I'm not using any remote graphical access and have had problems.
We briefly lost power the other day. Not terribly uncommon. MythBuntu rebooted. Now the graphical interface doesn't come up. I get the BIOS flash screen (on the TV). MythBuntu starts with the little bar showing progress. Then it does the usual flicker where normally an arrow cursor shows up for a few seconds and then the graphical MythBunutu boots. I assume this is when it starts XWindows.
This happens intermittently and has for some time. Usually I can reseat the card (BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC / 128MB GDDR3 / AGP 8x) and reboot and all is well. This time I've tried a dozen times to no avail.
I did apply updates the other day but I'm pretty sure I rebooted and tested afterward. That is my normal procedure. Still, you know how things can get skipped.
I'm an engineer that's been in computers for a long time. I'm moderately familiar with linux commands. I'm not an expert.
Any thoughts on whether this is a card, a driver or an xConfiguration problem? I have "known good" X86Conf files, but I'm hesitant to start changing things without some advice. I've done it in the past, but then again I'm still having problems, aren't I. :-)
I'm using the proprietary driver, mostly because I think I have to, to enable the TV-Out (Composite) connectors.
Thank you very much for any help, particularly pointers or logic flow so that I can use a system to work through the problem (instead of my usual poking around at things until it works, or I get change).
