What a way to spend one's 100th post!

I just discovered that one of the greatest games of all time, Escape Velocity, has a windows version and it installs very well in Crossover. I'd guess that it would work in regular wine just fine too!

I never really thought about it, but most Linux people, who usually come from Windows backgrounds, have never seen this game: it was one of the most sucessful Mac shareware games ever. The last version of it produced was also released as a windows port. Its THE classic space trader/shooter/take over the universe game. For those of you who played Tradewars, you'd love this. Also, I'm pretty sure Firefly's Jos Wedon had seen this game when he was thinking of what to do with the series. Find it at Ambrosia's (the excellent shareware company) site in the game section:

A note! You need to have Quicktime installed BEFORE installing EV for it to work properly, and it works much better on my machine when run in a window (find it in the prefs panel). Probably has something to do with my crappy ATI graphics card.

Off to pimp out my Gremlin transport!

OH EV! OMG! You have that working in Linux? Nice! I love that game, that game ruined my uni marks! :p

EV Nova, the windows port was pretty damn good, and was alot easier for me to play rather than using Executor (Mac emulator) to play the first two games.

Fantastic 100th post quietglow!! I wanna play now!

I've been playing and man it rocks...speed is very good on my (pre-centrino) P4M 2 ghz machine. Much faster than most of the macs I played it on, for sure.

Good to know there's another EVer out there! You all who've never played it should seriously give it a shot.

If this is working in wine, someone should add it to the app db at www.winehq.org . I'de do it, but i don't have the game.

Well that's what I was just about to ask...

I don't have Crossover, but have the latest wine (0.9.2?) and will try using that when I finish work.

I suppose I could look and see, but I'm not sure if the wine people want crossover sucesses in the db...I know it is essentially the same thing. I'll check and post it if it's kosher.

Hi quietglow, how did you install Quicktime? I can only get it as part of iTunes, and iTunes is doing its best not to get installed through wine.

I think I would make a really rotten wine assistant :-) I use crossover and it installs quicktime (and iTunes) without a hitch--it downloads them and everything. I know that the version of quicktime is crucially important: mine is 6.5.2. The newest Quicktunes doesn't work.

I don't work for Codeweavers, I promise, but the $35 or whatever I paid for crossover was REALLY worth it.

Haha! Well I'll check the piggie bank. Nah, $35 is okay if it will work. That'd be the last gasp of breath for Windows too!
