a problem with gimp brushes

ok i read that gimp can read PS brushes also. i have downloaded several PS brushes (abr format) and several gimp brushes (.gbr format) i put them in my brushes folder but it says they are an unknown file type. any help please? thanks

what happens when you refresh the brushes in GIMP?

Delete the .abr files and try again.
List the abr's please including were you found them and version of gimp.

i got the abr files from deviantart.com all the photoshop brushes in that section were .abr and all the gimp brushes i downloaded were .gbr

gimp version = 2.4
file names = abstractvsgrunge2_byalias.abr (a few others like this
and then i have about 20 or so other grunge brushes titled grungebrush1.gbr (goes through 22)

i hit refresh on the brushes but still nothing happens

abstractvsgrunge2_byalias.abr works for me (2.4.5)
What was the output from gimp in the terminal?

Delete all .abr file from the folder then add 1 at a time starting gimp after adding each and see if that gives a result.
