Whats a good OS for a linux server? Is Ubuntu Server any good?

Yes, Ubuntu server is good (this forum uses it).
If you know Ubuntu, you'll find Debian familiar, and Debian might be better suited.

Debian can do "server" well. When it comes to my personal preference, though, FreeBSD gets all my server votes.
What type of "server" do you want to set up?

Well I have no specific use for it now, but I'm a web developer and figured it would be handy if I know a thing or two about hosting the website yourself - in case some of my clients are interested. A potential client of mine could have use for a shared server. (They provide websites for local businesses)

Any mainstream Linux would be good server. Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware, openSUSE, Centos... Centos might be a good choice as it will be supported for an extended period. It depend on you: are you going to update the system every year, or are you going to use the same server for five years?
