Hi, I'm a new ubuntu user, having just installed an ubuntu partition on my iMac.

I've searched around the forums, but had a little trouble finding clear directions.

I'm looking to use my external HD in both OS X and ubuntu. I've disabled journaling, and it is connected by firewire. It mounts automatically in ubuntu, but is read-only.

I am looking for a solution that will allow the hard drive to be writable in ubuntu, and also in OS X. I've seen varying solutions such as "chowning" or mounting as the superuser. Which solution is the "best"? Will this solution be a one-time thing, or will I have to perform it every time I start up the ubuntu partition?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Problem solved: In OS X, I selected "Get info" by right-clicking the mounted hard drive, and then changed the permissions.

The easiest solutions are often right under one's nose!
