Okay, you want to take a screenshot of a program menu, but everytime you press the printscreen button on the keyboard, the menu vanishes! Eh?

I have just found a workaround for this and I'd like to share with everyone.

1. Open the program of which you wish to take the screenshot and make the window ready.
2. Now switch to another empty desktop workspace and open GIMP (Applications->Graphics->GIMP image editor).
3. In GIMP, press File--> Acquire--> Screenshot

4. If you want to take a shot of just that window, select "a single window", or if you want to take a shot of the entire screen, select "the whole screen"
5. Now, whatever option you have selected (window or whole screen), set time delay to 10 seconds (or less if you're quick enough ) and click GRAB.
6. The GIMP will take the screenshot after ten seconds and show you to edit!
7. Last but not the least, save the document. I frequently save it on the desktop to send as attachment to emails etc.

Tip (Thanks to Aysiu): If you take screenshots on a regular basis, you can create a shortcut for taking screenshots on your panel. Right click on the panel, and click "add to panel". Select custom application launcher, and in the command field, type gnome-screenshot --delay 5. This will take a screenshot of the entire screen after five seconds. In fact, I have made two buttons on my panel - one with a delay of 5 seconds, and the other with a delay of 10 seconds! Makes life much easier! :)

Well alright! That's a nifty find, anil_robo. Wish I had known this a few months ago. Would have been real handy. Any idea if GIMP can do this in windows?

In windows, you simply press the "print screen button" at your will, and fire up GIMP/MSPaint/Photoshop/any other and just paste it there!

I guess GIMP should be able to do the same thing (delayed screenshot taking) in windows too, because the app source is the same - only it's compiled for a different OS! Why don't you download GIMP for windows and try that straightaway, and let me know too? :D

Since this is something I do often, I've created a keyboard shortcut for the command: gnome-screenshot --delay 5

Yep GIMP can preform delayed screenshots in windows. Though I could have sworn that pressing the printscreen button causes menus to disappear like in linux. Though in windows it could be that some applications hide their menus on their own when printscreen is pressed and they call it a "feature".

I've been wanting to know how to do this.
(I find that you don't have to switch to a different workspace--in fact it made it harder for me.)

The easy way to switch between workspaces is to use "CTRL+ALT+RIGHT/LEFT arrow key". If you don't like to switch between workspaces, you don't have to! Just take the screenshot of the entire workspace! :D

Neat! I wish this was mentioned in the www.ubuntuguide.org! So intuitive, I am surprised why didn't I use that command! :D

I apologize for the inconvenience. I've removed the desktop switching part from this how-to.
Thanks! :)
