i am presently using ubuntu 8.04,without any damn issues on my desktop.its just a matter of few days before ibex is released.but,i wanted to know if i should upgrade to ibex.like i said before,i have no issues with hardy.in fact it simply flies on my system with such exotic graphic effects and eyecandy.my root partition is about 13 GB,and has only 3 GB of free space, which means i have installed a lot of software.i wanted to ask if upgrading to ibex will retain all those programs, graphic effects, the kind of look and feel that i have made on ubuntu,my settings, etc.and, should i upgrade or do a clean install.if i do a clean install,is there a way to back up all those software, graphic effects, settings, etc.and restore them after a clean installation of ibex?i have heard that ibex will have a new kernel.does that imply that my system would be faster than it is presently with hardy?

Dont fix what's not broken... But if you are about to upgrade anyway, for some reason, do a complete reinstall. If you try dist-upgrade you are begging for trouble :)

There's no compelling reason to upgrade, if your current one works for you, and it's still supported.
like i said before,i have no issues with hardy.in fact it simply flies on my system with such exotic graphic effects and eyecandy.my root partition is about 13 GB,and has only 3 GB of free space, which means i have installed a lot of software.i wanted to ask if upgrading to ibex will retain all those programs, graphic effects, the kind of look and feel that i have made on ubuntu,my settings, etc.and, should i upgrade or do a clean install.
I'm reluctant to tell you that you should reinstall, particularly, with all of the other stuff you have installed. Others may have different opinions, but I would probably upgrade.
I've continually upgraded this particular computer with every release since 6.06, and it's worked fine. If something goes wrong, the last resort, would then be, to reinstall.
if i do a clean install,is there a way to back up all those software, graphic effects, settings, etc.and restore them after a clean installation of ibex?
Yes, I believe so, though I don't have any personal experience with it. You can set up a "Home partition", that should back-up your files and settings. You can read more about it here:

I believe that setting up yi have heard that ibex will have a new kernel.does that imply that my system would be faster than it is presently with hardy?
There have been many comments here, that the new kernel is definitely quicker. (On my older computer, a 1.4 GHz Celeron with 512 meg of RAM, I definitely notice it.)

Are you comfortable fixing problems that might arise? If no stick to hardy and wait 4-6 weeks when most of the bugs are resolved then do a clean install of intrepid ibex.
