I have seen many ppl use openSuse at work (I use Ubuntu) .. I wanted to giv it a try and installed it on my laptop .. Its been great so far .. The integration with KDE4 feels absolutely flawless .. Yast, one central place for all settings is awesome too ..

I am not an expert when it comes to all these different distros .. I wanna how do kubuntu & openSuse differ? I know opensuse is redhat/fedora based while kubuntu is debian based .. so the package format is rpm ..

wht r the drawbacks of opensuse?
Like I said, m just starting to learn about the architecture, back-end stuff through kubuntu .. so would you recommend opensuse at the same time coz they really differ architecture-wise?
why do u prefer one over the other?

Sorry abt the long post!

IMHO OpenSuse is crap. It made my select the only sound card in my pc as the default to use before I heard any sound! Also, the package manager, even tough it's a lot faster in opensuse 11.0, is still a lot slower than that of ubuntu.

Thanks for the reply .. For me, sound worked out of the box .. I heard that the Yast2 package manager is generations behind Synaptic ..
That, the number of packages & the awesome community (I get instant replies on these forums whenever I need help.. wht more can u ask for) are wht r pulling me back to ubuntu ..

One other thing: I don't give a ****, but some people are angry at the fact that Novell, OpenSuse's sponsor, has signed a deal with Microsoft. This allows Novell to implement things in their products that other linux distributors can't use without risking patent infringement accusations from microsoft. As I said above, I would use OpenSuse if it worked better no matter what, but you might be interested to know this.

I didn't really see too much of a differance..then again i didn't go past the live cd. OpenSuse didn't have any drivers for my wireless but then again neither did Ubuntu 8.04's liveCD so idk I'll stick with Ubuntu for now.

Pays your money takes your pick (and in this case possibly quite literally.

OpenSUSE is often seen as quite a bleeding edge distro since it often includes new developments that will be included in SUSE's enterprise editions. And this in turn may b=mean the distro is less stable.

Some folk like the kitchen sink method of OpenSUSE where it throws in all the apps imaginable. Others have concerns over its links with Microsoft.

Anyway, there's a section of the forums here dedicated to OpenSUSE here: Other OS Talk: OpenSUSE (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=164) (which is where I reckon this thread will end up!)

In my experience a friend was installing it on his laptop and it was taking ages to download the updates. I guess they have a slow server or some thing..

I've used OpenSUSE before and found it slow, bloated, and more difficult to use than (K)Ubuntu.

Some of my dislike has to do with fundamental design issues. Its package manager, as others have mentioned, still has a lot of room for improvement. The YaST control panel is a good idea in concept, but it isn't as easy to use as Mandriva's control panel and the concept of having two separate control panels with overlapping functions and unclear distinctions could be very confusing to new users.

The fact that Novell is in bed with Microsoft is really just icing on the cake. OpenSUSE has more than enough other flaws to warrant using another distro.

I've used openSUSE 10.2, 10.3 and 11.0 so far and I've found it pretty good.

OpenSUSE has been better on hardware detection than even Ubuntu in my experience.

In the computer club we have a Dell Server and CentOS and Ubuntu couldn't install on it while openSUSE 10.2 installed without a hitch.
On my laptop, before Ubunut 8.04, only openSUSE managed to hibernate and suspend.

OpenSUSE has probably the nicest KDE implementation out there.
KDE 3.5 has had the slab menu choice that is in KDE 4 before there WAS a KDE 4. Since openSUSE is, I think, one of the largest KDE supporters/developers then I think I know where KDE 4 got their menu design...

Yast2 in openSUSE 11 is a LOT faster than in previously used version. The fact that it is available over a CLI makes it handy for running a headless server.

For those that don't want to use Yast, there is Zypper and SMART.

Regardless, Ubuntu and Synaptic makes updating and installing easier, partially because it isn't all bundled. Even Adept is pretty good.

I have no problem with the Novell-Microsoft deal. I use Microsoft products at work so anything that helps me be less dependent on Microsoft for it is a boon to my existence.

Also, I develop in .NET and if the Novell-Microsoft deal means that Mono is more compatible with .NET then that makes my skills more transferable.

Also, I think Novell is acting as a sort of "open source conscious" for Microsoft. Being a large company like Microsoft they understand how large companies work without having the attitudes Red Hat has.

Their One-Click makes installations even easier sometimes and they have some communal build service I don't quite understand.

OpenSUSE is my 2nd choice distribution.

Just for clearing things: OpenSUSE is NOT based on Fedora or Red Hat. It has been developed independently. Based on it's filesystem-architecture, it is more related to Slackware than anything else.

Fedora came from Red Hat,
Mandriva came from Red Hat (I think)
PCLinuxOS came from Mandriva
SUSE came from Slackware
Ubuntu came from Debian

(oh, where's my chart of "who begot who" in the Linux world?...)

I don't know if there are any drawbacks to openSuse. I tried it out on my laptop and found that it looks nice in comparison to Kubuntu. It also seems to have a pretty good power management system in comparison to Ubuntu also. It has been the only distro so far that powered down my sound (a little more than I wanted though--when it powers down it makes a popping sound).

The main difference would most likely be where they store the configuration files.

I give Suse/OpenSuse a try every couple of years. Usually, its install and uninstall in rapid succession (the package manager and control center used to be horrendous). I have to say, however, that version 11 is nearly spot-on. Its fast, intuitive and looks great.

How fast is Ubuntu? I don't have a problem waiting 1.001s for zypper to resolve all the dependencies needed to install a *full* openSUSE 11.0 with Gnome desktop: 1063 packages.

I'm using a Core2Duo E6420. And obviously the number is lower for easier tasks. Also note that zypper also takes time to look at your hardware and install any available needed driver, something I think nobody else does.
And you can be 100% sure that openSUSE package manager will find the dependencies if they exist, you can't say the same about Ubuntu's. See http://pho.ucsd.edu/rjhala/papers/opium.pdf, maths don't lie.

Since 11.0 openSUSE package manager probably is the single most advanced one... well, there exists OPIUM, but up to where I know OPIUM is just an experiment that nobody uses.

OpenSUSE is often seen as quite a bleeding edge distro since it often includes new developments that will be included in SUSE's enterprise editions. And this in turn may b=mean the distro is less stable.
Look at the full openSUSE 11.0 package list and give me a single example of such a thing.

Very disappointing distro, installed and plugged in two printers HPDeskjet3940 and HPLaserjet2600n gave me a VERY HARD TIME TO INSTALL. Drivers installed by default did not work. Cannot handle the simple plug-and-play concept of computing. As for their package management try manually installing an application from Yast or terminal and you will have a very hard time. Ubuntu cannot be simpler just plug, play, print surf, etc.

You cannot judge by trying just a couple HP printers ..
An earlier post in this same thread:

OpenSUSE has been better on hardware detection than even Ubuntu in my experience.

In the computer club we have a Dell Server and CentOS and Ubuntu couldn't install on it while openSUSE 10.2 installed without a hitch.
On my laptop, before Ubunut 8.04, only openSUSE managed to hibernate and suspend.

OpenSuse did not giv any problems with hardare detection or installation of software (ofcourse I jus installed a couple packages)

I noticed you mentioned hardware detection, however, I see no mention of peripheral devices, printers, external monitors etc. Could you relate your experience attaching any of these devices and their detection and usability. Also please compare Yast to Synaptic and tell us all how Yast is much EASIER AND MORE EFFICIENT TO USE.

I got my printer working without a lot of fuss (HP Deksjet 950C) on both systems.
I don't remember my scanner, well I do remember my scanner from like Hoary Hedgehog giving me trouble but that's ancient history and I would not put any weight into that.
My Adesso tablet was not recognized with either system as a tablet, but both of them recognized it as a pointing device (instead of precision movement it was relative movement).
Both systems cloned onto an external monitor without any issues

One thing to keep in mind is Yast is more than just for installing/updating software. Yast also provides configuring your network / wireless cards, samba settings, Apache, peripherals, firewall, users and almost everything else. Ubuntu uses separate applications listed in one spot.

Also, using Yast means that you use the same utility regardless of if you are using Gnome, KDE or Xfce (or window managers). Right now I'm in Xfce and I keep having to hunt and peck for my applications in the main menu, though this will change as I get more used to it.

Did you install the hp packages from Yast, I don't think they're installed by default on the DVD release.

The fact that Novell is in bed with Microsoft is really just icing on the cake. OpenSUSE has more than enough other flaws to warrant using another distro.

If you don't like Novell I think you should seriously consider not using Ubuntu, Novell have worked on a lot of projects including a variety of those which are included with Ubuntu by default.

Of course that includes XGL, Tomboy, Banshee, F-Spot and anything else that runs under Mono, KDE 3, KDE 4, AppArmor, Evolution, OpenOffice.org, Xen ... oh, and the kernel because they have contributed to the kernel regardless of whether they have contributed as much as Red Hat or not.

Remember, Novell is a large company with different components in addition to the amount of work they have done for Open Source projects and promotion;

SUSE (SLED and SLES) operating system
Netware
Mono
and is the only sponsor of openSUSE

Here we go, for the not-wanting-to-touch-Novell, here is a list of Novell Supported Projects (http://tr.opensuse.org/Novell_Supported_Projects).

I'm interested if Canonical has one, it would help in shutting up the naysayers saying Canoncial doesn't return anything to the community (which is b.s.)

That list is also old, They do a ton for the kernel now and have started creating tools for windows/linux work, which is needed. You will never get 100% of people over to linux or vice versa, but you will have to work with them. The easier that is the better. Not to mention the tons of work on KDE4 that suse has put forward.

There are those I guess who prefer OpenSuse but they would not be here. I have recently looked at OpenSuse 11 on the live CD. But Ubuntu seems by far the better choice for me.
I am on a high at the moment. I last ran linux as RH7.2 some years back. It was the most stable system until it was updated. Then until now I have had nothing be hardware conflicts and that can be expensive to resolve. Now my desktop is Ubuntu 8.04 and hopefully my laptop will follow in the next day or so. :lolflag:

It's good and I was tempted to use it. What keeps me from leaving Ubuntu are its philosophy, its huge helpful community (probably the easiest distro to get support for), and because its easiest to install on Ubuntu because Ubuntu debs are most abundant.

I'm not sure what you meant. DEBs and RPM are easily installable in any modern distro. 1 click install, BuildService, and packman, offer a hell lot more packages (and more up-to-date) than Ubuntu repos and debs spread everywhere together.

I have to agree on 1 click install and the Build service. It's an cool and easy way to get up to date software. The one thing that has always bothered me about Ubuntu and Debian is a lot of their software is old.

...BuildService and packman poop on all debs Ubuntu may have around the world.

The Build Service actually can build packages not only for openSUSE but also for Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise, CentOS and SUSE Linux Enterprise. It's just up to the packager/repo owner to choose which platforms to build on and prepare their package(s) accordingly.

It's true that the majority of packages being built in the OBS are for openSUSE only, but the advantage of the OBS for openSUSE is a temporary one since Novell has been so generous with it (well it's not completely altruistic, but it does benefit the greater community).

The packman repo is great but let's be clear: Packman is needed to help an openSUSE install catch up to the software selection of the default repositories in Ubuntu (or Debian).

As a mechanism for backports the OBS is awesome, but again it's not openSUSE exclusive and Ubuntu has PPAs popping up as well to serve a similar purpose.

I'm not knocking the OBS, beyond the default repos I have another 17 OBS repos in use on my openSUSE install, but the OBS isn't a magic bullet.

---

To answer the OP (many months later), yes I wholeheartedly recommend openSUSE. OpenSUSE is my first choice for an OS. Don't worry about package management, openSUSE 11.x has closed the book on the old complaints about speed and dependency resolution. The one thing package management is lacking in openSUSE is a cache that will let you resume a download if you lose your connection. Rather than resuming, the download will be restarted from the beginning (and this is being worked on for future releases).

One thing that openSUSE really has is momentum. They really seem to be trying hard to eliminate the big complaints against the distro. From slow package management to getting rid of the EULA to having their own board to assert some measure of independence from Novell to starting a community "Contrib" repo, to giving spreading the love to multiple DEs...11.1 is still fresh and I already can't wait to see what they pull together for 11.2

I know, I even posted a brainstorm idea about it:

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/14901/

Which clearly reflects the open mind of the community. Brainstorm is broken by design. What most people want has very little to do with what's right.

It's true that the majority of packages being built in the OBS are for openSUSE only, but the advantage of the OBS for openSUSE is a temporary one since Novell has been so generous with it (well it's not completely altruistic, but it does benefit the greater community).

As you see, it isn't just about it being open.

Yeah, but you can add community packages and the most used buildservice repos right from yast, with 2 clicks.

As a mechanism for backports the OBS is awesome, but again it's not openSUSE exclusive and Ubuntu has PPAs popping up as well to serve a similar purpose.

Ubuntu PPA isn't nearly as good as OBS.

I'm not knocking the OBS, beyond the default repos I have another 17 OBS repos in use on my openSUSE install, but the OBS isn't a magic bullet.

OBS and Packman offer much more packages than all Ubuntu repos spread in the wild, plus getdeb.net and all debs around this forum.

I couldn't agree more. And, actually, I was the one who filled the bug report asking for "download first, install after" since is more secure and has the "cache" advantage (while you lose the install as you download speed feature, but the difference is negligible, and the problems it causes are mayor).

One thing that openSUSE really has is momentum. They really seem to be trying hard to eliminate the big complaints against the distro. Yep. But I'm dying to see SLED 11 (SLED 10 wiped out the floor with every distro when it was released).

I've been using different distros for quite some time, and I can recommend openSuse. We Linux users should be happy that we have so much choice in distros. From my experience:

Why you should try Ubuntu:
- Fast;
- Huge community;
- Easiest distro;
- Long Term Support;
- Package management is fast and good;
- Using CLI is easier then on openSuse;
- Better support for soundcards;
- More vendor support;

Why you should try openSuse:
- Better suited for developers (during install lots of packages available, like Mono)
- More secure (AppArmor);
- Better integration with some Microsoft products (file formats, services);
- More business oriented;
- The best KDE implementation (and a customized Gnome);
- Looks more polished;
- 1 click Install;

The cons for Ubuntu:
- The Human theme (the look can be boring);
- Standard install is not as complete as openSuse;

The cons for openSuse:
- Feels a bit slower then Ubuntu;
- The 64 bit edition gave me more library issues then the 64 bit version of Ubuntu;
- The standard install might be overcomplete compared to Ubuntu;
- Package management is slower, sometimes harder to use;
- Customizing things in openSuse is more difficult then in Ubuntu;
- Soundcard issues on multiple systems;

This is what I experienced over time. I used openSuse from version 10.2 to 11.1, and Ubuntu 6.06 to 8.10. Right now I'm sticking to Ubuntu 8.04, because of the speed, ease of use, long term support and because I'm able to customize it easily. openSuse however is improving fast, and I like the fact that they contribute to the Linux community so much. I always install every new release on my hobby computer.

+1!! (where did the Thank function go?)

For those people that want to try openSUSE, there seems to be a lot of controversy over ver. 11.1 (very similar to what you hear about Ubuntu 8.10). OpenSUSE 11.0 is getting the better press (similar to Ubuntu 8.04). This is just my observations.

Fedora is a good distro too. To me it just seems a little more "raw", where you have to poke and do more to tweak it while openSUSE provides the control centers and Yast to help manage setting the system up.

I have also heard that there is an openSUSE KDE 3.5 LiveCD available though I don't know if it is an official or an unofficial one.

I use to dislike openSuse a lot. You really have to use the distro for a bit to get the hang of things, especially coming from Ubuntu and Debian. It's a bit harder to get setup up too. I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner. However, once you do get the hang of things and get it set up, it's may be the best distro going at the moment. It's certainly ranks right up there as the most stable.

One of the knocks against openSuse has been it's package management. It may not be as good as apt (and even that is debatable) but it's fast and it's thorough. When there are dependence problems it gives you choices on how to solve them. I've only had that happen once. I've yet to use zypper from the command line.

I've been hopping from one distro to another for a while now, but I think I've found a home with openSuse.

I would love to see openSUSE pre-configured and installed on some new hardware. I think once it's all set up it is a damned good distro but knowing how to set it up is the learning curve to ascend.

Yes that would be a great Pre installed OS, it's really feature rich and YaST is an awesome tool for beginners.

That's a bit vague. For the sake of users who are also interested in trying openSUSE, what don't you care for?

I agree that SLAB is an utter abomination, but you can change it quite easily.

I found openSUSE to be solid but way too heavy for what it offered.

Oh, I didn't think he could be possibly talking about such a trivial issue...

SLAB isn't bad, if you add your favorites there it is faster than browsing dropdown menus (same with kickoff), on the other hand, if you want to open applications which aren't favorites, then you're screwed up (and, to be fair, that is obviously less common than using favorites).

But meh, just change it if you don't like it (I like GNOME menu bar actually).

+1 on both accounts.

The slab is a mix thing. I kinda like it and kinda not. It seems to work better in KDE than the Gnome version.

As for being heavy, that I can't quite say. For some time Ubuntu has been pretty responsive but seems to be slowing down on my. Fedora is so far probably the slowest and openSUSE is not bad.

Of course I'm also working through the Gnome vs KDE responsive difference and familiarity deficit.

Fedora, from my experiences, is the "fastest" or "lightest" of the three, especially in regard to GNOME. Response time and overall ease of use is much better for me in Fedora than openSUSE and marginally better than a default Ubuntu install.

I would recommend openSUSE over Ubuntu.

No I would not recommend it. Until they fix the tweaks they put in to KDE 4. When I used it a couple weeks ago, I found their version of KDE 4 to be slow and buggy.
It's true that this is only my opinion, but I'm sure many would agree that openSUSE is one of, if not the best KDE distro out there. If you don't like openSUSE's implementation of KDE I'd love to hear what you have to say about the latest Kubuntu release. Besides, there's always the choice of GNOME.

I don't think there's a "wrong" way to do things, at least in this scenario. What hardware are you using it on, what services do you have enabled, etc? All these things make a difference. The machine I have Fedora on has a 1.73GHz processor, 1Gb of RAM, and integrated graphics (Intel). No fuss after install except to add RPMFusion and install codecs. I have the graphical effects on in Fedora, which I turn off in Ubuntu, and have fewer performance issues than I do in Ubuntu with effects on or off.

As it is with all distributions, mileage may vary.

I also find that Fedora is snapppier than openSUSE, and I would have stayed with it had Yum not developed a nasty habit of breaking kernel installations.

As for Slab, I had issues with it initially, being used to GNOME's standard drop-down menus but after a period of readjustment and exploration found it to be more efficient as I only use the same few programs once settled in.

YaST makes life really easy for those still not comfortable with CLI and Zypper is generally comparable to apt-get in terms of responsiveness. Apt-get is faster for large number of packages as it maintains download speeds from start to finish whereas Zypper (and Yum) seem to reinitialise the download after each package.

So to answer the OP's question: Yes, I would wholeheartedly recommend openSUSE, as I would Fedora, and the same with Ubuntu. All are fantastic examples of GNU/Linux though I would also add the standard YMMV caveat.

I find that Fedora is only slightly snappier than openSUSE, but it's nothing a little bit of tweaking can't fix. I don't think Fedora is suitable for my computers because of the kernel updates and similar updates which can mess with the configuration when I've got it all working right, though Fedora is a very good distro.

I like openSUSE and find it quite responsive, I'm using it with the XFCE desktop.

Ubuntu is easier to install and recognizes just about any hardware in use.

My other favourite is FreeBSD. It's boots up quickly and it's very fast. But FreeBSD installs very basic, and you have to do alot of configuration on your own, so it's not as simple as the other two.

So now I have openSuse on the desktop, and FreeBSD on the laptop.

I think that openSUSE's package management is certainly faster than apt, especially considering the time that apt takes the read the database. Though for me nothing has been faster than pkgtool for installing software.

I look at it that some people do better w/ other things. If you're a fan of KDE than openSUSE is the way to go. IMHO it's probably the best iteration of KDE you'll find and if they ever get it to being a more usable desktop than openSUSE will probably be the first to spotlight it. Very polished. If gnome is your thing than all three (Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE) do a good job. Ubuntu has a few more things going for it working out of the box as far as Compiz, Ubuntu Restricted meta-package availability, etc, etc. A little less configging/tweaking on the Ubuntu side. I'm not really a fan of the Liberation fonts from RH, I install the MSTCORE fonts (Ubuntu Restricted pack) and set to lower size which makes a world of difference in gnome.

I'll add my two-cents to the rest - A few years ago, I started my Linux experience with SuSE 9.0, and I have used it almost exclusively up through version 10.2. I do not like KDE version 4 at all!! so I stick with 10.2. I am currently using a desktop install of 10.2 for my network "fileserver" and "printserver."

In the meantime, I am learning Ubuntu on my desktop computer. I have had nothing but trouble trying to install version 8.10 on 4 out of 6 computers (one is a 64 bit machine), yet earlier versions will install and run fine on all 6 computers (SuSE also runs fine on all 6). Figuring problems with graphics support, I switched to Xubuntu and no longer have any problems. This tells me that 8.10 needs considerable work in supporting common graphics cards - assuming my mix of 6 computers is a reasonalble sample. This is of course hard to judge, but I have read in the Ubuntu forums of similar problems getting Ubuntu 8.10 to install and run correctly on a pretty wide variety of computers. Needless to say, I am disappointed in 8.10, and I am hoping that whatever the problems are in 8.10 are solved in the next release.

Actually, there are a number of things I like better in Xubuntu over Ubuntu. For one thing, the file manager has a right-click option that says, "Open a terminal window here" which I really like. Ubuntu does not seem to have that, so I have to type long change-directory commands. Xubuntu also seems to be a lot more responsive than Ubuntu. Most likely because it is "lighter weight" than Ubuntu in the GUI.

Some Linux users do not like Open SuSE because it is backed by Novell, but that doesn't really bother me too much, since it is really the open-source community that supports it.

As for which distro is better - I think the choice gets to be a bit subjective and it largely depends upon how you are using the OS. For me, there is little doubt that OpenSuSE is the better distro in terms of hardware recognition and using a GUI for setting up and administering the system, at least when using KDE. Ubuntu also requires more use of the terminal command-line. The command-line is the only user interface for the server version, although you can start up the GUI. As for the desktop install, I have come to really like the Gnome GUI too.

My main objection to Ubuntu/Xubuntu over SuSE is the odd restrictions for the admin account and the existance of a Yast-like GUI for admin/setup tasks. Ubuntu/Xubuntu wants the end user to use "sudo" exclusively. As a matter of fact, if anyone happens to post a "how-to" on setting up the admin account properly on Ubuntu, they'll be banned from the forums or some other silly punishment. Oddly enough, this restriction is built into the Ubuntu server version as well. And while the restriction is easily overcome, I find that it is downright peculiar to have that in the server edition, since if we are using Ubuntu for a server, we probably have enough smarts not to blow up the system if we logged on as "admin". I've been told that if I don't like the restriction, to use a different distro. You gotta love the control freaks; every organization has them. Oh well... If you do have questions about Ubuntu that won't be answered here, you might try asking them on www.linuxquestions.org. There, they understand the true meaning of sharing information.

I say "odd" here in light of the main mantras of Ubuntu, which used to say "...freedom to use the software however the user wants to." or words to that effect. I have noticed that the veriabage currently under the "Philosophy" section of the Ubuntu site has been rewritten latley to remove that particular part. Clearly, there are those at Ubuntu (or Canonical) that wish to be kind of like "Big Brother" and hold the user by the hand, thus keeping him/her from hurting themselves. I suspect these individuals migrated from the Microsoft camp. If you search the forums about this, you will find a number of plausible sounding reasons for this strange attitude, but most of them are not valid reasons, especially the one given for security.

All of this about the admin account is a moot point, except for security, if all the user wants to do is typical desktop tasks, like word processing, email, and surfing the Internet. Ubuntu is easy to intall and with the exception of version 8.10, it runs out of the box on most hardware. The Ubuntu server does not rate as well as other server editions according to outside Linux experts, but since I am not a server expert, I'll hold my judgement in that area. Actually, I sort of lean towards FreeBSD as a server.

Anyway you look at it, Ubuntu is a darned good Linux distro, despite any of my negative comments, and on its way to becoming a great Linux distro if not the greatest (if the Ubuntu control freaks don't run off too many people that is). It is already responsible for bringing more users into the Linux world than any other distro.

Since you already have it loaded, give it a good shake-down, and add your voice to others that seek to improve Ubuntu. I think this distro is worth the effort.
