Not too sure where to begin resolving this issue or figuring out what the problem is; so hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

Basically, at seemingly random times, the keyboard will stop responding. I can click and see all windows but any keys pressed on the keyboard are ignored.

I cannot click on the gnome menu, but I can click on the notification area icons, via the mouse. The only way to resolve the issue is to reboot. Restarting X, works for about 30 seconds, and then input is ignored.

This occurs with compiz running and not running. It occurs much more frequently when the laptop is unplugged, but still happens when plugged in.

Any suggestions?

I just wanted to chime in and say that problem popped up on my system, too, about a week ago. But it cleared up in the following round of updates.

were you using ati's beta drivers? or the mesa drivers?

I have come across this issue as well. Seems to be completely random. Sometimes I can just restart X Server, and sometimes I have to fully rebuilt. I'm using nVidia drivers not ATI.

I have seen this a handful of times on my desktop Gutsy system, where the solution for me is to unplug and reattach my PS/2 keyboard.

I also have a Hardy laptop which does this on occasion, although I believe it is consistant in appearance. This time seems to be when the computer is attached to the dock and the power goes out. I believe this occurs when power is restored, as I think I have gone in and shut down the system while the power is off, although I may be remembering when I had Edgy on the system.
