I was doing the automatic update from Gutsy Gibbon (Ubuntu 7) to Ubuntu 8 (Hardy Heron).

When the upgrade got to Local Settings, it froze for several hours. Later, I had to reboot the computer, and I am getting a black screen after the Ubuntu Progress Bar.

What is the best way for me to fix this without losing my data?

Hi and welcome, first you can use the lived cd and save your data. You may try and boot into recovery mode also to complete the upgrade.

Having retrieved your data and backed it up, you may want to consider a clean install, if you can obtain a live Hardy CD. Upgrades can be problematic.

Sorry for my noobishness, but how do I boot into recovery mode, and what is the "lived cd".
