I'm trying to boot Ubuntu 6.10 for 64 bit machines on my Dell Vostro 1000. It has an ATI 1150 video adapter. I'm trying to run the live cd so that I can down load it from the desktop. When I boot up I end up with a totally blank black screen. I've checked the integrity of the ubuntu download I received and the cd. I've tried to run live boot in display safe mode. What could be going wrong that there is nothing displaying after the system has booted up?

Ubuntu 6.10 is an old, unsupported version. Have you tried using 8.04? Also, you could wait until 8.10 comes out on October 30.

hardy heron (8.04) and Intrepid Ibex (8.10) both have updated kernels that support much more hardware

currently Intrepid is beta until the end of this month, when the full version is released

Hardy is a Long Term Support (LTS) version meaning there will be supported for 2 years instead of 6 months as with most other releases
