Ok, this has happened a few times after boot up, but not always. The applets decide to escape from the notification area.

The command:
killall gnome-panel

sent them back to jail, but the question is, does anyone else see this problem? Is there a bug filed for it?

Up to now, I only seen this in one PC running Intrepid Ibex beta amd64.

chewearn, that's a strange one. The only problem I have with applets is with "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" which, on reboot, doesn't always show but it's there in the task bar. It's just invisible. I have to remove it and re-install another and it's ok till the next boot. Happens on both 32 and 64 Ubuntu.
Cheers, Mike
