Afriend posted this on my old uni bb.

For those of you who are about to or have upgraded in the last 18 months or so...

NVidea used a bad substrate. All their chips are broken

It's heat related so mobile chips are suffering first, but all desktop chips have the same substrate so are susceptible to the same issue.

Tech summary: All Nvidia G84 and G86 based boards are bad.
Nvidia G92 and G94 are, to some extent at least, bad. 630, 7050, 7100 and 7150 boards are being replaced without explanation. G86 Desktop Products are also reportedly being replaced

G92 chip is used in: 8800GT, 8800GTS, 8800GS, several mobile versions of 8800, most of the 9800 and a few 9600 variants. Basically every Geforce 8600M and 8400M chip is affected, GeForce Go 7000 and 6000 lines, as well as the Quadro NVS 135M and the Quadro FX 360M

I own an ATI card so I can't comment. Has anyone had any any issues with these cards / chipsets?
