the 3d acceleration is slow because the proper drivers are not installed. I also had the same problems with my nVidia card but the nvidia site provided a driver for my linux box so i installed it and ran it and wow all openGL stuff started rocking again!
so, its just that find a proper driver for your card and install it!
p.s. i 've heard that ati cards are generally a bit backwards than nvidia performance and support wise.

I would not say they were backwards, Gforce tend to be the cheep cards and ati are like the intel of graphics cards, if you got the money their good but a real bitch to get working under nix in some cases, it was hell gettng my Gforce and Ati cards to work together in the same pc for multimonitor, still only got 2d on 2nd screen (ati) since it wont play nice with nvid drivers :(

Wrong. Ati and Nvidia have very similiar price ranges..

Not only that, but saying Intel is the best on the market is like saying that Pepsi is better than Coke. You can't say that because it is a matter of opinion. Some people like Pepsi, some Coke. But neither is definitely superior to the other. Same with processors. Intel and AMD make processors that are mostly equal (when comparing equivalents from each manufacturer). Some gamers claim that AMD is better for Gaming, some don't.
And, although I know with all my heart that Coke is definitely better than Pepsi, it is still only my own taste which determines that.

I hope you're not under the (very false) impression that KDE had anything to do with poor 3d performance...

I prefer Vodka over Tequila, but that's beside the point :D
ATI and nVidia both make excellent video cards. The biggest difference is driver support. ATI (for both linux and windows) has just crap for driver support. nVidia (Windows) has sort of a hit and miss with their drivers (Linux) they usually work pretty good, but for some people (I've never had a major problem with them) it's also a hit and miss.
Could be worse, we could have drivers like the Sis ones for Windows where if you try to change the refresh rate, you can't unhide the unsupported display modes (which usually Microsoft's OS screws up on detecting the monitor's capability) and then when you try to use the SIS utility to change the refresh, the driver crashes!
