I finally got my hands on "The One" and I've got to say I like it so far. The problem is Acer only released my top-of-the-line model with Windows XP. I would like ubuntu netbook remix, or the acer aspire one linux on it (acer said they couldn't give me a copy of their linux :/), and I can find neither. I would also like some suggestions on other possible linux's that are great for netbooks and maximize the 8.9 inch screen. Thanks!

System Specs:

8.9 Inch Screen
160GB Standerd Laptop HD
1.5GB Ram
950GM Intel Graphics
1.6ghz Atom (Clocked to 2ghz)

(And a bunch of little things like a built in 1.3MP camera, mic, etc.)

I would reccomend Xubuntu. You would have to make a bootable usb since you don't have a CD drive though.

linpus lite which the aspire one uses is highly customized. You can't even access the desktop without a lot of tweaking and even then its very limited. Your better off installing ubuntu

Google is your friend! Googling for "ubuntu netbook remix" throws up this (http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr) as its first result!

I own a netbook (Eeepc 701 4G) and I've installed hardy on it. Not a remix, just standard hardy. But it did need tweaking. Instructions for that were on the eeeuser.com wiki. Maybe something similar can be found on the Aspire user's wiki... if there is such a site?

Anyway, my point is this: ubuntu's a good fit for netbooks, even before it's been remixed.

Hi there!

Running Hardy Heron on mine complete with Compiz - runs like a dream! :-)

All the best,

Stenrad.

I'm currently running Xubuntu on mine (the 18 gig ssd version), very speedy but some of the instructions are a little different if your using xubuntu (for example, hardware drivers are not accessed the same way) You probably could install ubuntu and install a different desktop afterwards to maximize speed later.

Sorry, I think I need to clarify. I couldn't find any netbook os downloads. I found pages describing them in mass but nothing to download and use tailored to netbooks. For instance the ubuntu netbook remix page has nowhere to download the remix. Thanks for the replies so far.

I dont know if you have solved this already but the link that I used is here (http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/) I am using Remix on my Aspire One right now.

It is Ubuntu eee Netbook Remix. It works out of the box on the Aspire One. WiFi works with no problems although WiFi light does not light up. It is a little slow compared to normal Ubuntu on the AAO. Thats compared to One Linux Unbuntu which is custom for AAO. Much much slower than Linpus Lite but to me its a lot more usable than Linpus. I prefer it even though it is not almost instant on like Linpus lite is.

I made a boot USB drive with unetbootin (http://lubi.sourceforge.net/unetbootin.html) on Windows using the Ubuntu eee iso. When that is created it. Plug in the USB thumb drive and as the Acer splash screen dislpays, press F2. Go to boot in the BIOS and make the USB drive no. 1 in boot order. Restart and follow install instructions.

Aspire User (http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/) has a lot of valuable info for the AAO

I just got my AAO and your comments are just the reason I am hesitant to wipe Linpus and install the Remix. I don't like the Linpus at all, but it is quick and the simple tweaks does reveal the XFCE desktop quite easily. I would keep it as is except that it is Fedora 8 underneath, which is not even going to be supported after December. The kernel is 2.6.23 and quite old now. My reasons to own a netbook is pure mobility and usuability. I probably will not be trying to do anything sophisticated on the road with it. I just simply prefer Ubuntu and will probably eventually give in and install it.

BTW, Montgomery is my home town. I live in England now, but grew up in Wetumpka. Small world.
