Epson Artisan 700 Working, but with issues

So I replaced my aging HP deskjet with something a little slicker and got a new Epson Artisan 700 all in one thingy. I got it to work with a pair of drivers from Avasys (http://avasys.jp/english/linux_e/index.html): pips-lite, and imagescan.

I had to use the pipslite-install program to query the machine and build a custom PPD file for CUPS to use.

The problem I'm now having is that I don't really get any printing control from applications as far as paper size, DPI, and color or grayscale. All of those options are controlled by the system printer configuration, making selecting paper size and other options a pain.

Is there a way to edit the PPD (or do something else) so I can have more control from my applications?

Gutenprint 5.2.3 apparently supports this printer... But mine is giving me some trouble too. Before I upgraded from Gutenprint 5.0.1, it would only spool a bunch of blank pages when given a job. Now that I have 5.2.3, it doesn't even spool a page!

I think the Artisan 700 is the same as the European Epson PX700W printer and I have got that working for wireless printing using pipslite.

Are you printing 4x6 Photos with the Gutenprint driver? With the simplified driver i managed printing, but the quality of the photo is not as good as if printed directly on the printer via sd-card.

With the full featured driver i have not managed printing on the photo paper from the upper tray. Don`t know why, but it always takes the paper from the lower tray.

If you managed printing photos in good quality, how are your printer settings?

Kellogs, do not use the Stylus Photo RX700 as suggested, but select the Epson Stylus Photo TX700W, which is the same printer as marketed in Australia. For some odd reason it is the only variant listed. According to the openprinting database, PX700W (Europe), TX700W (AU), Artisan 700 (US) or EP-801A (JP) - all same printer.

I also used the RX700 driver initially and had poor colors until I switched to the correct driver.

I am using Karmic.
