[SOLVED] lost sound, again

I lost sound after the last automatic update (last night 10/14). It was a big update and I don't recall all that was in it. I'm running Hardy 8.04. This same thing happened on a Ubuntu upgrade a couple versions back. I tried all the suggestions posted here, and only got the sound back after a subsequent upgrade. I guess I'll just have to go through all the suggestions again, but it is so time consuming. It's one of the few things that is maddening about Ubuntu (and Linux in general)

I apologize for ranting but I feel better now. So, back to work fixing (trying) to correct the errant sound thing.
