I have a Toshiba Satelite Pro L10, I uninstalled windows xp in 2006 and been using ubuntu ever since, I want to reinstall windows xp professional so my sister can play sims 2 on it.

I still have the genuine product key stuck to the bottom of my laptop, but i did not get a windows xp cd with my laptop. A friend gave me a windows xp cd to try(not genuine) but when it asked for my cd key i input my cd key from the bottom of my laptop(genuine) and it would not install it keeps denying the key. So i am assuming the cd my friend lent me was cracked, (not my problem.)

Is there any way i can get a genine cd without the product key (i dont want to pay for another key i would not use).

Or is there any .iso i can download that is an exact mirror of a cd that my product key will work with, legally.

p.s My friends cd installs SP2 and i am only 90% that my laptop key came with SP2 installed, could that be a problem?

Saj
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you tried contacting Microsoft? Their service is pretty good regarding lost CD's and product keys. They can probably send you a new CD.

Would I have to pay?

I think the problem is that your product key is a Toshiba OEM key.

Call up Microsoft to activate over the phone, and if you explain your problem to the rep, then you should be fine (I've done it before now)

Have you installed XP?

If so just choose "Activate over the phone" and it gives you the number to call for the UK. They'll then give you a code to enter in :)

I cant install it, becase my prodct key keeps getting refused by the install cd(my friends).

I think thats the problem thats why i want a genuine install cd or a mirror of one.
They is genuine so installing with a miror of the cd should not cause any problems as long as its not cracked.

Like Joeb454 says, even if you DO get a genuine disk I doubt it will work.

Windows serial numbers are version and type-specific. Your serial number will only work with an OEM version of XP, and possibly only a batch that Toshiba have, so borrowing a disk from a friend won't help (genuine or not).

Your best bet is to contact Microsoft about it and tell them you wish to reinstall, but don't have a disk.

Hmm, I guess you'd be best to call up Microsoft and ask them about it. I'll see if I have an XP professional disc lying around I could send you :)

Actually - If you have a genuine key - Microsoft will usually not care whether you used the correct disc to install or not.

E.g. I used a Dell install disc on a HP machine to reinstall XP Home, called them up, and told them why I'd done that, and they basically said "Ok. That's fine, I'm now going to give you a code to enter onto your computer"

And that was that. That machine is still running that same copy (It's one of my friends PC's)

If you have a CD of the same version of Windows that was originally installed (Home, Pro, SP1, SP2) it should work with the legit key you have. If not call MS and they'll correct the situation. Make sure you have your current key present with you because they will ask for it.

Yeah, that's what I meant, but the OP won't be able to install at all, since XP asks for the key before installing.

So phone MS, explain the situation and get a new key from them.

your sticking point is you don't have a disk. microsoft will refer you to toshiba, who will charge you, or microsoft may offer you a disk, and charge you (maybe not the full amount as you have a genuine key).

the point is you will be charged for a disk for which to do an install., unless you can borrow one the same as the key label on your laptop. i would ask all my friends!

best of luck

You Should Contact the Manufacturer of the Laptop to get a System Restore Disc, the key on the bottom of the laptop is for Toshiba's OEM Version of XP SP2, it would install without any problems, and the key would not be needed since it is the restore disc for that laptop, plus they should have the Drivers Disc that came with the laptop too, You will need those to reinstall anyway, as when you reinstall, if you do not have the driver CD, you will run into alot of problems, Good Luck friend.

the key your typing in is not working cos it does not match the version of windows your installing

you will need an oem copy of windows xp to install.
read your licence key stuck to your pc, it will tell you what version of windows xp you need, be it pro or home.
