I think of Windows as a system for those who know what they're doing. For the competent, it can be a bit of a pain but still works pretty well. It's the inexperienced and/or foolish who get into trouble.

I second this. if you are reasonably tech savvy, using and administering Windows it's not such a big hassle

I like Windows. I always have. I run Linux and like it too but I don't run it because I hate Windows. If anything, I dislike Microsoft and the people behind it.

Windows has always run great for me. I must know what I am doing. :D

I also have no opposition to using either operating system, in fact, I just like to try out different things and learn from the experiences. Funnily enough I actually _enjoy_ developing for Windows :\
Windows shouldn't be bashed quite as much as it is. It is a fine OS for those who know how to use it. :)

I like windows because it supports my printer, linux does not. *shrugs*

Other than that, I'd be mainly using Ubuntu.

Windows is great for people who know what they are doing.

1) It's easy to maintain and secure if the above is true
2) It runs Microsoft Office, a collossal and ubiquitious set of applications in anyone's book.
3) It runs pretty much all the software in existance as every man and his dog is developing for windows.

For me Windows XP and Vista are two of the best operating systems that I have ever used. Linux is getting there for me, and will become my sole OS in time because the direction that Microsoft and Windows is headed is the opposite to what I want. So Windows is perfect for me "now", but it won't be in future.

I liked windows...for a while. The direction it is heading with its partners like riaa and mpaa are just terrible.

Imagine a future where you cannot buy a dvd, blueray, cd media for your private use and you have a pc or a mediabox attached to a high definition television with 8.1 surround sound. you turn this on and are introduced to music and movies. there is a catch to this. If you want to view your star wars movie, it will cost you 9 dollars a pop. If you want to listen to metallica, it will cost you 3 dollars a pop. you need broadband as well. Remember the dvd divx players back in the early 90's it was a mpaa backed dvd player that sold dvd's for 9 dollars, the dvd player was connected to a phone line and you only had access to the movie for like 32 times. IT BOMBED! and curcuit city was promoting this.

This is our future and this is what bill gates wants...well he wanted the pc to be personal but is being hammered by the mpaa and riaa. he just wants to make everyone happy.

Software activation is also terrible. Most softwares require activation and need a connection to the internet. Mass Effect, spores are 2 pc games which require you to be connected to the internet and needs verification every 2 weeks to activate the game or it shuts down. It only lets you install the game 3 times and then it's game over. UGLY STUFF! this is another reason why i switched over to linux.

With ip pro act, fair use laws being destroyed, etc. ip monitoring, it is well underway in converting the internet into a very ugly world.

With linux, I can store all my old tapes, cd's, home movies, pictures without paying a tax because it is free! software is yours, everything, it belongs to our commmunity under gpl, other agreements etc.. With windows based systems, they basically charge you so you can look at your stuff....so to say. I can go on and on and on and open more eyes to horrors that are facts and not fiction But I just wanted to share my nightmare.

Vista is the ugliest and most disgusting piece of crap I have ever played with. I could'nt even copy one text file to another directory. It phones home too!

ever consider getting a new printer? i guess that makes too much sense. you can get an HP all in one for like 50-60 dollars at walmart. that's a lame excuse to keep windows.

Not when I can't sell this printer worth a damn. This printer cost me 100 USD (On Sale) a year or so ago. My grandma has a Z705 Lexmark printer (I think). But it's a roundabout installation on Ubuntu.

Quite frankly, I'll wait for ReactOS to come out in a year or two. But it still may not work with ReactOS, since ReactOS is made to run win2k and NT4 drivers, not WinXP or Vista drivers.

oh really? bill gates is my "buddy" then? what was i thinking? you're right. i should uninstall linux right this minute, run down to best buy and open my wallet and spend $150 on vista because bill is such a good guy.

i guess some people value being microsoft-free more than others. say hi to Bill for me.

Some people (like myself, really), can't afford to throw away a perfectly good piece of equipment and buy another. If Windows is working fine for him and it's not costing him any extra money, it's not lame for him to keep it.

Too true, if you have a legacy piece of hardware that does all that you ask of it (and works to your satisfaction), regardless of OS, then why should you be forced to upgrade?

Sometime Windows has the upper hand, sometimes Linux (for the sake of argument). A compatible legacy driver can save many hundreds of pounds (or dollars, if you prefer).

With Windows you are almost forced to upgrade hardware because it has become legacy artificially via the hardware manufacturer's need to sell more hardware. Sometimes compatibility mode can readdress the balance, but on most occasions not.

'why or why not like windows'. How many truly like Windows, OSX, Linux, *BSD etc. We all argue, we are all vindictive, we are all human, we all feel the need to defend our corner of the ring. I prefer Linux, the person after me will go through what I've said with a fine tooth comb and embarrass my ***, so is life.

In my case, I'd have to "downgrade" to use Linux. It'd cost me about 30 or so dollars to get a "old" printer. But, I may have the money, I just don't want to get rid of my all-in-one, since I can copy a piece of paper in seconds, that is... if it doesn't jam or not feed paper. Plus, it'd cost another 30 or so dollars to get ink. (I can't afford a laser, not when laser cartridges cost 50-60 a pop, and when the laser itself would cost the same as this all-in-one I have.)
