I am running Ubuntu 8.10 and Wine 1.1.5. Someone will have to explain to me just how Picasa works - it's on my applications menu, but it obviously is running in Wine - the menus and such give all sorts of Wine clues.

Anyhow, my XP copy of Picasa is slow, very slow, and tends to hang and become unresponsive.

Picasa zips along without so much as a hiccup in Ubuntu/Wine.

I don't know why that is, but I like it a lot.

I find that MS Office also loads and runs faster when I run it from Wine than from its native XP.

I'm all ears if someone can enlighten me.

Thanks.

Picassa is an application ported with Wine - it actually bundles its own copy of Wine that only it uses. So upgrading your system Wine to 1.1.5 doesn't affect Picassa.

As for why both Office and Picassa are running faster for you in Ubuntu/Wine than they are in XP -- well, there's really no reason they shouldn't. The normal reason Wine apps tend to be slower is due to bugs in Wine, but for the Office you're running they've been largely taken care of.

When it's not Wine bugs causing slowness, differences between Linux and Windows itself become important. So, in your case, Linux was simply faster than your Windows setup.
