View Full Version : [other] Gmail - HTML View vs Standard View

Hi,
I use Gmail. It is superb. The only problem I notice is that when I am using Gmail at home, I must switch to the HTML version rather than the standard view.

If I use the standard view, I usually get an error when I try to send an email or if I check my inbox and then go to check another email; the emails are still marked as unread.

When I use Gmail at college I never get this problem.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Also, I use sites.google.com (http://sites.google.com) and notice that I cannot add an attachment at home but I can at college.

My broadband download is 3mb/s and upload is about 380kb/s.

I just found that I do not have the above problem with Gmail when I use my laptop to access my home broadband.

It must be my desktop usb adapter being contrary. Funny though as my desktop internet connection is very fast.

That would certainly be something to check out.

I use Gmail extensively both at home and at the office, and frankly, I've never seen or heard of anything like that.

I've been watching your thread, and have interest in what the solution is for you. Unfortunately, I haven't replied until now, because, I don't know what the problem might be, nor do I have an suggestions as to a possible solution.

Please post an answer when you have one...

Hi,
I may not find an answer anytime soon. This seems quite an anomoly. I will just use my laptop to connect to Gmail standard view and to add attachments to Google Sites.
Cheers.

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution to this one. I am just posting to let you know that I have the same problems. Perhaps it is more widespread than you/we think?

Like I said, I also have this problem, but only with my Ubuntu desktop. In my case, I log in and Gmail says it is loading my account, the progress bar makes it about 99% of the way and then the whole thing slows down. I usually just opt for the html view rather than waiting to see if the standard view ever actually loads. I have no such trouble using a Mac or Windows laptop also connected wirelessly.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing this is that my Ubuntu desktop is connected with a Linksys wireless PCI card. Someone suggested their problems could be caused by a USB ethernet card.

PS - Why is this tagged as "SOLVED". It is clearly not solved. Opting to use a different computer is simply a workaround, in my opinion.

Hi russbuss,
I agree, I'll mark this as unsolved.
Amazing thing is, I reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 and now my Gmail works perfectly from my desktop. Must be a gremlin somewhere that has now departed.
