Hi there

I've been using Ubuntu for the last 4 years along-side with windowz boxes. Also, the last 6 months I've been running a headless hardy server that, simply put, has changed my computing experience. Ubuntu is also running on laptops and PCs, either as the only OS or dual booting with XP and Vista.

2 days ago I decided to switch my main working laptop (Dell XPS 1330) completely to Linux, so I thought to try other KDE-based distros, just for the sake of change. First I tried Kubuntu 8.10, but I didn't like the KDE implementation. Too much cluttering for me. Also, compiz doesn't integrate as well with KDE. Then I tried the recently released Mandriva 2009. I must admit that the KDE implementation is very nice, compiz is well integrated, and the whole OS looks very polished. urpmi works well, but IMO nothing compares to apt in terms of speed and reliability. Anyway, I quickly discovered that under the hoods there's too much work to be done. To mention a few problems, basic Linux commands didn't work, such as "locate" due to problems to the locate.db file. Also, launching programs from the command line as root didn't work either. BTW, the sudo approach of Ubuntu is much better and saves time. I found the solutions to these problems, but googling for fixing OS core functions isn't what I want. In the end, KDE was crashing preventing me from getting into it. So it was time for me to try the next distro.

Then I decided to give a try to Intrepid, even in its beta stage. Well, I am simply amazed. Finally, the broadcom wireless card works flawlessly, sth I couldn't achieve in hardy. The system is lightning fast, and I have only faced minor problems (some applet crashes, etc). Samba works much better than in hardy and network connection is also faster. For some reason I couldn't discover, the b43 driver in hardy was only giving me 700-800k in wireless transfers to and from my server, while in Intrepid I get a wonderful rate of 2,5-3mbps.

My conclusion is that Intrepid, even in beta stage, is much more solid than other stable-released distros and the final release will be even better.

A big thank you to the developers for giving us such a wonderful OS.

Keep up the good work. :guitar:
