hello there,
thank you very much for your efforts
I have been using Ubuntu 7.10 for a year now, I just downloaded the live CD and installed it after getting sick of that stupid XP:evil:. I wasn't experienced then nor am I much knowlegable about Ubuntu now but I kept learning:). Anyway, I wanted to update to the new Ubuntu 8.04 through the update manager but I don't know whether this update will result in reformatting the hard disk or not?? Do I have to back up all the things I stored on the hard disk or is the update to the newer version not going to affect them???
thanks in advance for your help

Shouldn't result in any loss of data :)

I would back them up anyway, but to upodate through the update manager won't over right anything, all it does it mass replace current installed programs with the latest versions for the release your updating to, with a bit of cleaning up and preperation done as well.
I personaly would wait for a while for the Ibex(30th of this month) release, then do a fresh install to Ibex, but the choice is yours.

Esselamu 3aleikum.
8.10 is coming soo.
You could wait another month, after its release, then upgrade.
Just an idea...
Good luck.

thanks so much. I guess I'll have to wait till the end of the month then. I don't really have a lot of external media storage devices so it's a lot of relief that I wonn't lose the data when I update
again thanks everybody for the SUPER fast response !

No. All your personal settings stay just the way they are. The upgrade will not change any of your personal stuff.

thanks, it seems that I'm still trapped in the windows mentality, I thought that the update will install a new version that has nothing to do with the previous one and erase the part which is similar to the C:/ partition in windows :(.
Ubuntu is like a fantasy dream for some one who worked for almost a decade over windows like me, thank god that I got rid of that windows, I hope I can get rid of windows thinking pattern as well:lolflag:

What you have to realise, is that you need time to get used to Ubuntu and all its features. It took me about 2 years, and I still consider myself a newbe. But give it time and steadily, through ups and downs, you'll gain more confidence and feel more at home with Ubuntu.
Good luck.

FuturePilot, that's the way it is supposed to work with released code. At various times with Alpha & Beta I've lost personal settings & bookmarks. Back up any data you'd like to keep on a USB, on the internet, another computer, CD's, etc.
My solution is to dual boot, with one relatively reliable running install and one test install. On occasion early Alpha's will blow it all.
