Ok. I am using gnome mplayer right now. It can play all formats I want it to play. But it has it's downside too :

1. It cannot play dvd from harddisk with menu support. It can play dvd from hdd but without menu support. ](*,)

2. It does not integrate well with compiz :(. One issue i have is,
when I open a video, the minimize, maximum, exit button dissappears. I have to go to fullscreen with ctrl + f then exit fullscreen with the same keys to get those buttons back agains. :lolflag:

I appreciate that mplayer can play all formats. I mean only 1 player does all the job. But I would like to have something better if available .

VLC perhaps? I don't watch many DVDs on my machine, but I know VLC's a hell of a good piece of software for any media playing.

I installed vlc. It does not have the issues mplayer had and it can play dvds with menus :D . But when i try to change audio channels it gives me error message "VLC could not open alsa device "default" ( no such file / directory " Although i have selected in the preferences -> audio -> audio output -> oss.

Any workaround for this ? :)

VLC, totem-xine, and xine-ui will play DVD's..... they don't use the menu though.

xine uses the disc menus for me.

Yep. I had some issues with VLC, and then discovered xine. It does the trick for me. All menus, options, etc work like a wonder.

xine uses the disc menus for me.

I haven't had xine-ui in a while, I'll have to check it out. Since I only had one DVD movie, I might not of known the proper way to use the menu.

I had just used the xine file system to click on the different parts like VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB.....

In the play window, I right click, select Playlist | Get From | DVD and it will start the dvd with the menus

If I re-install xine-ui, I'll check it out, thank you.

I find that I need to use two media players - vlc for video and exaile for cds. Not as cumbersome as it sounds and I've been really happy. I am running ubuntu 8.10 beta and vlc has been updated for that release.

IMO, Smplayer is the best video player out there! Give it a whirl ;)

Well, you can play dvd with menus in vlc too. Just click open disk then browse the folder that contains the dvd. :)

The issue is gone and i don't know why . :lolflag:

Smplayer ? :) Sounds interesting .

Also, let me mention that when I had gnome-mplayer it played things ok but with mplayer i got "Failed to open file" . Does anybody know the reason behind this ? :)
