So I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to Hardy and now the hardware volume control on the side of my machine does not seem to be working (the Fn+F11/12 doesn't seem to change the sound either).

Sound is working though - and I can change the volume using the little icon on the top of the screen.

In System->Preferences->Sound the Mixer is set to HDA Intel (Alsa mixer) and PCM is selected for whatever that's worth.

There are a few DarU1 notbooks that have this problem -- including mine. I've not been able to find a fix. Fortunately, when I'm watching a flash video, the volume control on the Flash window seems to work most of the time.

It is a problem with ALSA. At any rate, I tested Intrepid not too long ago, and it works again. It's only a couple of weeks away, so I'd advise you to hang tight until then if you can.
