Mandriva 2009! That looks great! I installed in a virtual harddrive using virtualbox in my Ubuntu and I am so bloody tempted to switch to it! it's awesome!!
I have some doubts about whether it will recognize webcam, wifi, video card etc.. but it looks wow!!
See below screenshot. The Machine Device Help toolbar won't be there.. that's because it's on a virtualmachine..

Sabayon Linux used to claim they had the best looks, but I haven't followed them for a while.
Linux mint looks ok.
Ubuntu Intrepid Beta has some a good dark theme (not the standard).
You will most likely need some of the smaller distros.
Like Dream Linux (osx clone)
OpenGEU, an E17 linux distro
...
Any kde 4.1 distro looks nice, but kde itself I find it lacking compared to gnome.
---
I would just pick Ubuntu and take a look in the desktop thread in the sticky in the Cafe.
A guide to customizing can be found in my signature.

EDIT? You mean out of the box?
Sabayon has a release with the full Compiz cube enabled. It's looks really good.

"best looking" is highly subjective.
Personally I like the default appearance of MoonOS and Crunchbang.

I've always loved the default look of Fedora. But defaults are really easy to change; why can't you customize it before your demo?

I'm not a huge fan of Fedora's GTK theme to the (or the wallpaper, really; it's a bit clinical). At least not to the point that I would call them "the best".
However, its bootup and login graphics are astounding. There is something particularly thrilling about being able to expand and collapse a verbose boot details panel with the mouse seconds after the computer powers on. I also love how they maintain the GTK look and feel throughout. (Although I've never learned whether it's an actual real GTK theme engine doing all of that, or just a hackish skin that "looks like GTK").
GNOME has some really pretty wallpapers packed in by default, and I believe Foresight holds on to them out of the box.

I think the "out of the box" default theme for xubuntu is really nice. click on compositing and it's even better.... out of the box.

I love the Fedora wallpapers (well, the balloons in Moonshine were a bit weird ;)).

I don't think that there are any distros with a tiling WM by default. Am I wrong on this?

With the endless amount of linux distros available you are bound to be wrong.

I'm sure some enthusiast has used LFS and made such a distro, but I haven't heard of any publically released projects using a tiling WM.

Yeah I would say OpenGeu is about the best I've seen. It may or may not be every ones cup of tea, but it does have a "feel" of "completeness". As it's been designed by an artist who has obviously took time to make sure the "shelves" enhance the whole desktop.

I'm also partial to the Fedora look. Mint is close, but I've never tried it, and am only going by the screen shots. :-) I will also admit that one tiny detail about Fedora that grabbed me was the black mouse pointer. I hate the white, Windows-like mouse pointer that most distros seem to prefer, and the black pointer in Fedora had me won over right away. But overall, I had a much better "out of the box" impression with Fedora over OpenSUSE, YellowDog and Ubuntu. Notice, however, that I have stuck with Ubuntu. :-)

I think Kubuntu Intrepid is pretty damn smooth-looking out the box.
It successfully converted me from a GNOME/Xfce/Openbox user.

linux mint looks great out of the box, only distro where ive kept one of the default wallpapers and themes.
definitely try it if your looking for something that looks great without any customisation. also has alot of media codecs pre-installed and picks up hardware really well.

I'd rather focus on the usability and the flexibilitiness. E.g. show how it works directly from USB stick(puppy) and how lightweight it can be(with fluxbox) and lastly how good it can look(what you are doing) with Emerald and Compiz-fusion and handful of different themes. Then again, preaching and "forcing" them to see the good stuff without mentioning the bad stuff does no good if they don't feel interested.
Though in reality, I'd suggest you to just mention that "This is linux" and continue as nothing special had happened. Linux is nothing special.

Mandriva 2009!
Wait, a first post by a new user asking for a best-looking default desktop, followed by a plug for Mandriva 2009?
You Mandriva fanboys need to learn a little subtlety. Moved to Other OS Talk.

What else should they be plugging? A distro that they think is ugly out of the box?

I think the implication is that this newbie, who seems to have only one post, is a puppet that showed up just to say "what looks best?" in order to let the Mandriva brigade respond with "Mandriva!!"

Possible, but there was only one post on the first page suggesting Mandriva, and it was by a different user. If the OP really intended this thread as a Mandriva-worshippers reunion, wouldn't they have just said "I think Mandriva 2009 looks great!" in the title?

Yeah, thats exactly why I emphasized "looking" in my above post. I don't like OpenSuse myself for that very reason (yast), but the aesthetics really shine.

For out of the box though the best I have seen is either Dream Linux or Sabayon.

Maybe, maybe not. It's a spam technique too -- set up a sock puppet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockpuppet_(Internet)) that asks for help with something, and a reply that points at an external site. Some of us call them "team spammers."
In this case, it may or may not be an empty user account set up just to allow the "Mandriva 2009 looks great!" comment -- so in this case, the entire thread may or may not be a weakly disguised attempt at astroturfing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astroturfing).
See? Mods aren't just average everyday nimrods with phenomenal cosmic powers. We're highly trained pseudoprofessionals skilled in the art of prying out the bad guys. ...

I thought openSUSE looked really good, but I couldn't get past dealing with Yast, either. Ubuntu is nice if you put compiz on and get a nice wallpaper (the brown is a little dull for me.)

I personally like Ubuntu's Human theme.
BTW, any distro is good as long as you have a good theme. If you want to make your distro look good I recommend Mac4lin (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac4lin).
