Is there a way of using the vBulletin quote feature in an opening post?

It seems to me, from my limited usage of the feature, that you have to be in an already existing thread to make a quote. Is this correct?

Not quite. You can insert a quote wherever you please. It's just a matter of correct markup. There's even an icon in the Reply_to_Thread editor.

This is an example of a manually entered quote:

Spurious quote

You could have inserted this even in the first post of this thread.

Also if you wanted to quote something from a different thread, you could click the quote button, which would naturally take you to reply to that thread.

Just copy/paste that from the reply box into your new thread :)

That is the exact syntax used for quotes. And if you wondered how I got that in, I used the noparse tags. Like so: Stuff you want to put in without [IMG] code interfering.
