so I tried to upgrade my version of ubuntu to whatever the latest version is. I download it (the 3 seconds remaining to download took over half an hour >.<), started installing it (which also took stupidly long), got about half way through after three hours and turned my pc off as it was nearly midnight and I have to be up at 6am and it was (naughty word)ing me off.

I have installed to dual boot on my hdd with xp. I now have three listings for ubuntu (and three more for rescue options) as well as xp. I have the original ubuntu I had installed, plus two more for the upgraded version. None of the options (except xp) work. They'll show the ubuntu loading screen, then show me a blank desktop. Nothing to click on or anything. The rescue options are equally useless.

Without formatting the hdd, how do I either remove ubuntu so I can start from scratch (download the live cd rather than use what I have) or fix ubuntu?
