I was just wondering is it possible to run a game without the desktop running?
As in closing the x server completely so the CPU doesn't have to worry about that and then just has to run the game :)

If its possible how do you close the close/kill the xserver? I know "startx" starts it up but whats the equivalent of "stopx"?

if you log out and press ctrl+backspace it will kill the gui and give you a terminal then you can just run it in there.

For serious so that shuts down the xserver completely? Also I mean games like Doom3, Quake 4, and UT2004 :)

yea, the problem is those games need X running, i would suggest using a low memory window manager such as flwm, or just loging into the terminal only thing.
