Hi yesterday i recieved a spam message over pidgin from a dummy email address the message looks like:

(12:53:44 PM) kbkkaaohrjbrjvwsr@live.com: Hey ****** .....I cant upload my pics to msn for some reason!
Hit me back up on http://RosellaTiptonibok.blogspot.com
My screen name is Sexy_Lady_69 you can find me there.

where ***** is my msn screenname it is blatantly some phishing scheme I blocked the address but i recieve another one today from a different address, neither of the addresses are on my buddy list, is there any way to stop these messages? Shouldn't it not allow messages from people not on my buddy list? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Only allow messages from contacts in your list, and Deny all others. That should take care of it.

Thanks for this, I didn't know that Privacy menu in PIdgin was even there, I'm getting about the same things. From randomlettersandnumbers@live.com constantly saying that this is his friends msn and that i should add his real one and go on webcam...seriously, how stupid do they think we are? Not even the least tech savvy people would fall for crap like that. I used Kopete before and never had this, but got it in PIdgin, thanks for making me realize there was a Privacy menu :P EDIT: With this option if someone adds me will it ask for me to authorize or something because what if someone from Ubuntu forums or another forum that I actually want to talk to adds me, will I just automatically block them or will it ask for authorization?

If someone adds you, you will get a notification box and be asked whether to authorize the said user or not.

Good, just double checking :)

For Kopete users, see http://kopeteantispam.sourceforge.net/ - a nice plugin that helps a bit. I have written a patch for this that prevents anyone not on your contacts list from messaging you - it's available here (https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=2333222&group_id=229210&atid=1076376) but this of course does require you to recompile the package, which is not that easy.

I also have a .deb that was created for Ubuntu 7.10 in a quick and dirty fashion using Checkinstall, but does mean you can easily install this with "dpkg -i". PM me if you'd like a copy of this.

I have passed the patch to the author of Kopete Antispam.

There is a plugin for pidgin that can stopped these problems for me.
Essentially it gives you a white list ( only the people on your contact list can contact you ).
