I might be missing something, but I applied an icon theme in Appearance, and it changed all the desktop and menu icons. When I go to a folder in Nautilus, though, all the folder icons are the boring brown-grey Gnome icons, and I can't work out how to change them.

Sometimes I have to install the new theme, then switch to a different system theme or two, then back to the one that I want to get it to act right. It seems that when a new theme is 1st applied, it doesn't always (or ever for me) take fully on the first try.

Give it a shot and see what happens.
