I have looked in thunar's help and thunar's own menus and the man page
and found nothing. The forum has a previous thread that seemed to be from
somebody whose thunar was sorting alphabetical filenames. On my PC, thunar
shows directories before files, but both in what looks like a completely random order.
MS's file manager provides options to control sorting.

Thhank you, mark

In Edit->Preferences you can set whether or not to sort folders before files, and then surely simply clicking in the name column-header will sort by file name, with folders either sorted separately at the top or included alphabetically in the list according to your choice. It's a long time since I looked at xfce, but I seem to remember that is how it was. Very like nautilus, in fact.
