When my headphones are plugged into my laptop, I am getting some sort of noise in the audio signal because I can hear very slight crackling, and what's strange is that interacting with the laptop makes it more noticeable. For example, when I hit a key, or when I open a new window, I can expect to hear a small burst of it. I'd guess that this has something to do with very small voltage changes that cause noise by changing the display output or something, and the fact that my AC adapter has no ground pin.

When I plug in speakers (which are connected to a subwoofer with a ground), there is no crackling. When I use the headphones on my PC, there is no crackling.

Is this unsolvable?

UPDATE: This only happens when compositing is enabled in either KDE4 or Gnome. When desktop effects are disabled, sound is crystal clear.

This has to point to something.....
