Can only use one audio app at a time after upgrade

I have a Dell Vostro 1500. With Ubuntu 7.10 I could have say xmms and Flash (youtube) both open at the same time, and hear the audio from both. After upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04 I can no longer use more than one audio app at a time. In addition, Totem Movie Player will not play audio if one of the other (xmms or Flash) are already open, and vice versa.

Any help here, even just troubleshooting/keyword suggestions, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Totem Movie Player 2.22.1
Flash plugin using Firefox 3.0.3

are you using OSS or ALSA as audio mixer
