I need to pick up Vista....
Which version of Vista should I pick up? The 64 and 32 bit versions are the same price.
My laptop has an AMD Turion X2 2.0 ghz chipset and the Vista 32 max 3gb of RAM. It ran Vista 32 well, before the HD died. I had been dual-booting Vista 32 with Ubuntu and I will do so again once I get my HD replaced. If only I still had my original install DVD!

You gotta think what you going to use, check if the programs you want are available for 64bit.
Better yet, take 32bit vista and 64bit ubuntu:)

most current cpus are, but what about his limitations in programs? Or isnt that anything to worry about?

Thanks for the replies guys.... I was dual booting on Ubuntu 64.
Will 32 bit programs run on 64 bit machines?

Yes, I'm using 32-bit Firefox on a Windows XP 64-bit machine as I type this.

ahh....ok.....so since the price is the same then there is no reason not to go with Vista 64.....

The only reason I can think of not to go with Vista 64 is drivers. If there isn't a 64-bit driver for one of your devices, that device won't work.

can you give me some examples? I didn't encounter any significant (for me at least) Windows program that doesn't have a 64 bit version. not to mention that, in any case, the 32 bit version will run just fine ;)

No I can not give you any examples, I don't run 64bit vista. I was asking you if there wouldn't be any problems, apparently there isn't, then I would say GO 64BIT

if you don`t plan to put more than 3.5gb of ram vista 32 bit will work perfect if it has lower price.

Absolutely! Unless there is a need to go to 64 bit (i.e. ram requirements in a server) there is no need for you to go to it. The headaches that you can save will well be worth it.
To often we get into the trap of because I can, I am guilty of that one aswell.
For desktops, avoid 64 right now

Definitely NOT.
Unless you have hardware incompatibilities go ahead with Vista x64.

Java works in 64-bit XP. It runs under 32-bit compatibility (in 64 bit you have "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86)"). What problem did you experience?

there is zero difference in price between Vista 32 and Vista 64....at least not on NewEgg.
As for hardware incompatibilities....
I have a HP DV6815NR....which reminds me.....they don't ship with install DVDs......so it really is my fault that I didn't make a backup... :(
well anyway... here is a link with the stats....any thoughts?

Just so you'll know:
Since you are maxed at 3GB ram, Vista x64 will use up slightly more of your RAM for itself than the 32-bit version...and Vista likes RAM.
I think for your situation, 32-bit is better, but that's just my opinion.
FWIW, I think Linux (in General, not just Ubuntu) does x86_64 way better than Windows at this point. Most everything in a 64-bit Linux install is 64-bit. Install x64 windows and your task manager will be littlered w/ "*32"'s
Just an opinion, do what you like.
Also note, if you can get your hands on a x64 iso, the same key works for 32-bit as 64-bit...they are not specific (at least in the retail versions - could be diff. for OEM keys, I don't know for sure).

Actually my laptop tops out at 4 gb of ram....but I see your point.
I would prefer that I use linux full-time but I do not have enough confidence in my skills to make the complete switch. As a teacher, I have a lot of educational software that I am required to use in my district and WINE has been too much of a hassle for my limited skill-set.
I'll look for an iso. I still have my windows key (the sticker in on my battery cover)......
Thanx for all of the replies.

Go for 64 over 32 if you have more than 3.5 GBs of RAM. Otherwise the speed diff is minuscule on the systems I've tried.
