KDE Rocks!
Since getting a daru2 laptop about 1 year ago I have spent more hours than I care to count dealing with Gnome desktop and gdm issues. These first started after attempting an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy. I eventually had to deal with some of issues by doing a completely clean install of Gutsy. (There were still occasionally annoying Gnome panel crashes and I had to reinstall some python libraries in Gutsy even after a clean install.)
Needless to say, I was quite reluctant to upgrade to Hardy when the LTS came out last spring. I waited as long as I could and finally decided to do the upgrade using the suggested method (from the update manager). At first things appeared to go well but the upgrade had a fatal seg fault over some issue related to fonts just before finishing. I was able to get the new install working but Gnome continued up to its old tricks of panel crashes and sometimes not logging into my account at all! I was fed up with Gnome on the daru2.
I had nothing to lose. I backed up my home directory and burned a kbuntu CD to give it a try. I have used KDE under RH7.3 for years with very few problems. I also think KDE blows the doors off Gnome for user config and other cool options. I just like it more than Gnome.
Well, I have not been disappointed. KDE under Ubuntu 8.04 LTS has not failed me once since doing a clean install. I'm very happy with the performance of the daru2 using Kbuntu and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to change desktop managers, or anyone annoyed at Gnome crashes.
I see there is a new Kbuntu 8.10 release out. I'm not sure I'm quite ready to do the upgrade yet, but I'll let you know if I do.
Here's to happy laptop computing under Linux!
