I was wondering if there was an open source/free version of Linux that was made to run on the PS2. I've heard of "Linux for Playstation2", which was released by Sony, but it's no longer available in the US and has to be imported. It also probably costs a lot of $$.

That's because it's more than just Linux -- it includes a hard drive and some screwdrivers along with a Linux DVD.
This is because it's a kit for you to mod the PS2 (non-slim) to run Linux.

It lets you run linux off a usb drive.
Expect drive access to be slow as PS2's use USB 1.1
