Precision M2300 Microphone not working

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my new Precison M2300. I have tried all settings for the input devices in th esettings but my microphone refuses to work. I have tried it both on the sound recorder and skype.

using method G: linux-backports-modules. now my microphone works but not very well..

A better and more complete solution would be welcome, if anybody has one..
