I have a copy of Matlab for Windows with a student liscense. Right now, that's the only thing keeping me from swapping completely to Linux. Since Matlab is available for Linux, is there any way to get my Windows version to work in Linux? Or would I have to have it specifically for Linux?

you could use winehq or cedega to emulate windows

with cedega just simply change directory to where you have the program installed and hit cedega filename.exe

A friend of mine had Matlab for school, but her Matlab CD came with both Linux and Windows versions on it.

I don't think this one had a Linux version on it. I just had the disk for 1 day on loan from the department office, so I can't check now.
What about Octave though? Open source and claims to be mostly compatible with Matlab. Anybody ever tried it?
