Sound mixer

I record myself singing occasionally and I have no problem recording using stereo mix, but for some reason my recording volume doesn't seem to be as loud as it was under windows. Is there some setting I can type in terminal to get that louder or do I need a new mixer program or what?

ok i got audacity to kind of work, i can get it to record my voice just fine, but when i start playing any kind of music and try to record myself, it wont work.....it says this

Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.

I looked at the setting and put it at its lowest quality, but dont know what else I can do
