Jack Help... Cannot connect to jack servers

Oh jesus... This is starting to **** me off! I really wanna use JACK (especially JACK beat) but whenever I run any "Jack" app I get this error

Unable to get on air. Is the JACK server up ?

#1... How to fix this? I have looked and have not found a solution!

#2... Why does it need to connect to a sever?
