[SOLVED] Close VLC and audio keeps playing

While watching a movie with VLC and I close it, the audio continues to play. I have to pkill vlc to get it to stop. Does anyone have any ideas why this would happen and how to fix it?

I have Ubuntu 8.04.1.

with vlc 0.8.6 click the 'stop' button before exiting

with 0.9.x it's 'fixed' but other things are broken
