On my Windows partition, I had XP. I installed Vista on it and it retained my XP files and put it a windows.old folder.

Now, I upgraded (yes. upgraded) from Vista to XP again. I didn't format my partition before installing XP again. I am having problems because the Vista files still exist and they are creating conflict. Other than that, I want to free more hard drive space by removing those files but I don't know what files to remove. I just don't want to damage my system.

What could be the best solution?

Reload from scratch.

Windows really does not have a clean downgrade path, and even there upgrade option leave junk all over the place causing more problems then it is worth.

For stability your best bet is to backup your data and reload XP, formatting the drive when you do it.

+1. Always back up your data before you reinstall any os. There are no 100% guarantees that all will go well.
