Ubuntu freezing

I have a prob where Ubuntu freezes when I start downloading updates.

The machine has 256MB RAM. Ubuntu has 512MB swap file with ~6GB for the OS & programs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

by 6gb do you mean it is on a 6gb ubuntu partition?
if so then you may be out of space witch causes it to freeze because there is no room for the updates to be stored.
if that is what you mean i suggest makeing your ubuntu partittion at lest 10gb then trying it.

I allocated 6GB for Ubuntu. I thought that might be the problem as it recommends 10GB. Resizing the parition is doable but messy. I'll probably try that next.
