My motherboard is screwed. Onboard ethernet died about a year ago so I installed a PCI Ethernet card, but more recently the USB has also died, so obviously something is up with it. It's time for a hardware upgrade anyway, so I think I'll replaced the mobo/RAM/CPU.

I've never replaced the motherboard on a Ubuntu PC, so I don't know how it will react to it. In my experience, Windows typical throws a hissy fit if you put in a different type of mobo and will halt at a bluescreen.

Is Ubuntu likely to do something similar, or does it take more kindly to major upgrades? I know I should back up all files beforehand anyway, but I'd like to know what I'm in for, if I need to reinstall then that's just what I'll do.

Hi and in my experience with ubuntu I have installed on one system and moved to another and the most I have had to do is to reconfigure the xorg. If you are using the same graphics card then there should be no issues. Fingers crossed. :)
