My gazelle value has been working fine till now.
whenever I introduce a cd, it is not detected by my system. I am running ubuntu 8.04.
I also tried to reinstall ubuntu, but now I can not to boot from the cd room. It inmediately boot from the HD. I set the boot sequence to start from the cd room. I have installed/reinstalled ubuntu many times in my gazelle and this is the first time I have a problem.
I am worried. I dont want my gazelle to become a mac book air:(. I want my cd room/RW working.
Any ideas? I guess there is a simple solution that I dont know.

1. Just to confirm, you just did a fresh install, right? Not an upgrade?
2. Go into your BIOS. Does it detect the DVD player? (I'm betting yes, since you could set it in the boot order. Just making sure.)
3. When you insert a CD, does your drive spin up?
4. Do you get an error message? If so, what is it?
5. Try re-seating your drive: Open the drive; remove the battery and ac adapter; remove the screw on the bottom that holds the drive in place; pull the drive out. Push it solidly back into place. Replace the screw.

I am in my job now, so do not have the computer here, but:
-it has ubuntu 8.04 installed.
-I am not completely sure when it stopped working. I just tried to burn a cd yesterday and I realized the problem.
-I did not do a fresh install in the last month.
-In the BIOS, itr still shows the option to start from the CD driver. However, It wont start and the version installed in the HD take over without any delay.
-When I insert a cd, it does a noise that I guess is the cd spining. But it stops after that. No CD is detected by ubuntu.
-I will need your help with that solution you posted. Sounds scary to try. Dou you think it is necessary? May there be a piece of software that I uninstalled by mistake?
Thanks for replying.

Give me a call if you need help with the procedure, and I'll walk you through it.

It's not very likely that you un-installed anything that would kill you dvd drive. And even if you did, you should still be able to boot from a live CD.

Are you sure that your live CD is bootable? Did you burn it as an image or a data file?
